ARMY SOUP RECIPE - FOOD.COM

Army Soup Recipe - Food.com image

My dad used to make this when he was in the Spanish Military. They ate this morning, noon and night. I was brought up on it and missed it when I left home. Now I cook it for my family and they love it. This stew is called 'Patatas Guisadas' but we renamed it 'Army Soup'.

Total Time 1 hours 15 minutes

Prep Time 20 minutes

Cook Time 55 minutes

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 16

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 onion, finely diced
1/2 green capsicum, finely diced
2 tomatoes, chopped
500 g rump steak, cubed
5 large potatoes, cubed into medium sized chunks
3 carrots, sliced
1/2 Japanese pumpkin, chopped into large chunks (Or your favourite pumpkin)
2 tablespoons paprika
salt and pepper
2 teaspoons beef stock powder
7 cups water
1/2 teaspoon powdered imitation saffron
1 bay leaf
1/4 cup dry sherry

Steps:

  • Heat oil in a large pot.
  • Saute onion, garlic, capsicum and tomato.
  • Add beef and cook until browned.
  • Add sherry and let it reduce a little and add some of the water to cover the beef.
  • Let simmer for about 20 minutes.
  • A pressure cooker takes less time.
  • Add rest of the ingredients and water and bring to the boil.
  • Lower heat and simmer for a further 1 hour or until potato is soft and soup appears thickened.
  • If using a pressure cooker, follow steps 1 to 4 then follow step 7 and place lid on pressure cooker and time from when the pressure starts to build up and shake the cap for 12 minutes cooking time on medium heat.
  • Sometimes when using a pressure cooker it becomes quite watery. If you like to thicken up the soup just use 1 tablespoon of corn flour mixed with a little water and stir into the soup until thickened.

Total Time 30 minutes

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 20 minutes

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 teaspoons butter
1 (12 ounce) package maple flavored sausage
1 pound extra-lean ground beef
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
4 cups milk
2 teaspoons beef bouillon
6 slices white bread
3 sprigs fresh parsley

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and maple sausage, and cook until no longer pink. Gradually mix in flour, while stirring continuously, until the mixture is thick and pasty. You may not need all of the flour. Slowly whisk in the milk using a fork so that lumps do not form. Stir in bouillon. Continue cooking and stirring constantly until the mixture reaches your desired consistency. The longer it cooks, the thicker it will get.
  • Toast slices of white bread, and top with the meat gravy. Garnish with a little fresh parsley, and serve.

FOODS OF WAR: SH*T ON A SHINGLE - WAR ON THE ROCKS
Jun 16, 2015 · The original recipe from “Manual for Army Cooks,” 1910. As the recipe suggests, S.O.S. is less of a dish and more of a rubric: Make a sauce, add meat of some type, and serve over bread. In this light, the dish fits into the same culinary genre as the southern staple biscuits and gravy, or even the British classic beans on toast.
